Going into today's game it was a certain that either the Marauders of Central State or the Tigers of Savannah State (GA) were going to win their first game of the 2005 campaign and the Marauders did just that eking out a 28-27 win with 00:21 seconds left in the game before 6,183 spectators at T.A. Wright Stadium in Savannah, GA. Derrick Moss

Derrick Moss (at right) plowed through the Tigers’ defense for the three yards necessary for the conversion and to give CSU the final 28-27 victory.

Initially, Savannah State jumped on top 14-0 with a touchdown in both the first and second quarters before Central State really got its offense moving. In their first Marauder possession of the second quarter, after Savannah State had scored its second touchdown, CSU Head Coach Theo Lemon replaced Chris Clark at quarterback with Ife Oyedokun, 5'11" Jr. from Chicago, IL. While he was in the game Clark was 0-3 in passing with one interception and had run twice for a minus nine yards. Oyedokun himself was picked off on the third pass he threw but the Marauder defense bailed him out by forcing a three and out by the Tigers' offense.Donnell Simon

In the next marauder possession Oyedokun directed an 82 yard drive in nine plays capped off by a 19 yard pass to Donnell Simon (at right) for the first Marauder touchdown to make the score 14-7. Savannah State then drove 72 yards in nine plays culminating with a 31 yard pass from Tiger QB Byron Stanley to Garret Williams for their second connection for a touchdown of the half. Not to be out done, the Marauders took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field 58 yards for a touchdown of their own. The score came on a 52 yard pass from Oyedokun to Marcus Fails (below at right). The first PAT by Devon Boyd was nullified by an illegal formation penalty against the Marauders but even with the additional five yards Boyd was good on his second try also to move the Marauders to within a touchdown of the Tigers again.Marcus Fails

The Tigers tried to answer with another drive of their own but an interception by Antonio Carver of the Marauders at the goal line as time ran out in the half ended any hope for Savannah State.

This was homecoming at Savannah State and as with many homecomings the home team is penalized as the second half begins because the half time activities run over. CSU kicked off and even with the additional ten yards Devon Boyd's kick only traveled to the seven yard line and with a thirteen yard return Savannah was first and ten at their own 20 yard line. Savannah State then began a 10 play 80 yard drive to score with Clyde Tullis being on the end of a thirty-nine yard pass from Garret Williams for the score. The Marauders then blocked the kick of Dalibor Brnada, the Tigers' kicker to make the score 27-14. An interesting note was the after the Tigers' second touchdown, Brnada missed the PATAnthony Madison but a penalty against CSU gave him a second chance and he made the second try.

After Brnada kicked off to the Marauders, Derrick Moss returned the ball 41 yards to the Savannah State 38 yard line. Moss then ran the ball for no gain. On the next play, Anthony Madison (at right) caught a 38 yard Ife Oyedokun pass for a Marauder touch down. Boyd's kick was no good and the Tigers led 27-20.

In the fourth quarter both teams were exchanging punts when CSU gained possession of the ball on their own 25 yard line with 7:20 remaining in the game. When their drive stalled on the Savannah State 49 and facing a 4th down and ten, Theo Lemon called for the Marauders to punt the ball away. At this point the Marauders only had one time out left.Zach Weber

A 45 yard punt by Zach Weber (at right) pinned Savannah State back on their own 4 yard line. After Savannah State gained one first down CSU called their last time out. Two plays later with a 3rd and two situation on their 25 yard line the Tigers gave the ball to Chadrick Cone. Cone ran to his own 30 yard line but then fumbled the ball. A pile of Marauders fell on the loose ball and CSU was in business again with first and ten on Savannah State's 34 yard line. Two penalties against Savannah State then aided the Marauders. First a face mask penalty gave the Marauders a first down at the Savannah State 15. On the next play Oyedokun was picked off by the Tigers but a pass interference call gave the ball back to CSU on the Savannah State 2 yard line. Oyedokun ran for one yard and then gave Derrick Moss the ball and the Marauder running back from Dayton's Dunbar HS ran the one yard into the end zone for the touchdown with 21 seconds remaining in the game. Down by one point Lemon made another gusty call by going for the two point conversion. The ball was given to Derrick Moss who plowed through the Tigers' defense for the three yards necessary for the conversion and to give CSU the lead 28-27.Ife Oyedokun

Moss finished with 112 yards rushing, ten yards receiving and 38 yards in kickoff returns for a total of 150 all purpose yards. Ife Oyedokun (at right) was 6 of 15 with one interception for 122 yards and three touchdowns. Zach Weber, (6'1" So. Springfield, OH) punted 6 times for a 43.7 yard average with a long punt of 60 yards.

Today's game ended the Marauders season and they finished at 1-5. Savannah State, a NCAA D-IAA program is now 0-8 with three games remaining.

Moss finished the season averaging 97 yards a game rushing and 128.3 yards a game all purpose yards along with three touchdowns.
