Gangs and greeks

When you think of the word gang, you think of a group of bad boys and girls overflowing with tattoos, leather and weapons. Some people may think of gang members as do-rag wearing thugs who hang together and have the same common thread of disrespect.
Webster’s Dictionary defines "gang" as a group of persons drawn together by a community of tastes, interests, or activities.

Most greek organizations have their colors. They have blocks where members socialize. They have special handshakes and rituals.

Many Central State students have noted the similarities between gangs and frats. But they don’t necessarily see the frats as bad.

Are all gangs bad? Is there a line that can be drawn to measure good and bad gangs? “I could see how someone may compare greek organizations to gangs,” said Tache Houston, a new member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “Many people tend to draw the wrong conclusion when they do not know all of the facts about a group of people,” Houston said.

“Whatever the consensus is make sure that you have enough evidence in your findings before you label people,” said senior Donald Stewart, a member of Iota Phi Theta.
