CLASS OF 2005

Four years of change

By Tenika Woodford, Contributing Writer, Graduating Senior

Over the past four and five years, many things have changed at Central State and we, as graduating seniors, have witnessed all of these changes.

The campus looks different today than it did four years ago. The university tore down the old breezeway to build the natural sciences and education building now under construction. It also built two new dorms – Foundation 1 and II after tearing down Paine and Lane halls. Many of us remember what the old Café looked like and were happy that the university made renovations.

Many of the people who started school with us didn’t make it to graduation. Some new staff came, while others left. Do you remember the former residence director? How about Mama Watson? Do you remember Big Amber who had the best store on the yard with snacks for the low? How many of you were shocked when the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. returned to campus, as well as the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity, Inc.?

If you’re like me, you remember the buildings and staff, but what you most remember are the experiences you had at Central. How many of you remember the tragedy of September 11? People said that Ohio might be a target because of Wright Patterson Air Force Base and we ran to the basement of Williamson Hall to take cover. Do you remember when a tornado was spotted in the area and the dorm director put a student out of Williamson despite the winds and the sirens? I remember. Or how about when a girl set another student’s dorm room door on fire in Green?

I also remember when May Week was real live — an entire week of fun. I remember when the school brought that group Hiprocksoul for May Week and the crowd threw their CDs on stage. Do you remember the return of Marauder football? If you do, that’s surprising. They aren’t coming back until next year. We thought we’d see them this year, but that’s a memory for next year’s graduates.

I’m sure that everyone has their own experiences, because I know I do. I’m sure that there will be many things that you will miss, but my fellow graduates, we have come to the end and to a new beginning. We have left our mark here at Central, now we must move on and produce new memories and new experiences. Hopefully, when you think about your years in college, you can look back and say, “I had a ball.”

See Ya at Homecoming!
